Cooper Hewitt National Design Museum is a part of the Smithsonian Institution and the only museum in the nation devoted to historic and contemporary design. It was founded in 1897 by Amy, Eleanor, and Sarah Hewitt as part of The Cooper Union for the Advancement of Science and Art. And in 1967, became a brance of the Smithsonian. It is housed in Andrew Carnegie’s mansion on Fifth Avenue in New York City.
Cooper Hewitt’s exhibitions present the impact of design on daily life. Collections include more than 250,000 deisgn objects and a design library. The museum also sponsors the prestigious National Design Awards.
