Coralling the most relevant and creative on- and off-line bits that pertain to the design community – and said community is openly invited and encouraged to add their hard-earned links.
On July 7, during the closing days of the 2006 FIFA World Cup in Germany, the official emblem for the 2010 World Cup in South Africa was unveiled in a festive performance, capped by a powerful speech by Thabo Mbeki, President of the Republic of South Africa.
The logo has been designed by Switch Design – led by Creative Director, Gaby de Abreu – a branding agency with offices in Johannesburg, Cape Town and London. The logo features a figure performing a bicycle kick, the African continent as a background and the now-official World Cup logo that was first introduced in the 2002 World Cup Korea/Japan and then appeared in the 2006 World Cup Germany.
Switch Design’s work was chosen over five other participating design firms that were announced on September of 2005: Grid V in Johannesburg, Orange Juice in Durban, Enterprise IG in Johannesburg, Switch in Johannesburg, Jupiter Drawing Room in Cape Town, and Two Tone in Johannesburg.
