Herbert Bayer, born in Austria, was a Bauhaus member from 1921-1928. From 1925 on he headed the workshop for “Printing and Advertising”. In the same year, he created the Universal Typeface (later adopted by Paul Rand for the ABC logo) and temporarily abolished capital letters from his work.
He also worked as a painter, photographer, and architect. In 1928, Bayer left the Bauhaus to serve as art director of Vogue‘s Berlin office before settling in New York City in 1938.
