Organic Design

Organic design has come to mean any form that exhibits a curvilinearity or even biomorphism. Its roots lie in the concept of organic architecture, developed by Frank Lloyd Wright. So form is not necessarily be based on traditional aesthetic values, but is present in the design task itself making it close to functionalism.

In 1942, the MoMA held a competition and exhibition called Organic Design for Home Furnishings. Its aim was to highlight furnishings that were of an organic nature in terms of their material and design approach. However, the winners Charles Eames and Eero Saarinen interpreted the theme purely in formal terms. Their molded plywood chairs were ‘organic’ in the sense that they expressed the curvilinearity of nature forms.
